Royal Mint2

The Royal Mint has over 1,000 years of history dating back to 1886.  It has long since been the sole producer of circulating and commemorative coins for the United Kingdom, with historic issues such as the sovereign recognised throughout the world to this day.

The Royal Mint as we know it today moved away from London to its present premises near Cardiff in time to meet the demands of decimalisation, with the first coin struck on this site by Queen Elizabeth II in 1968.  The Mint now strikes almost five billion coins a year and has most recently produced all the coins issued to celebrate the London 2012 Games.
