This is a coin so rare that it has been known to create fierce competition amongst collectors…
Struck out of the New Orleans Mint in 1888, it wasn’t discovered until the 1960s, but soon became one of the most famous coin errors in the world. And it has a rather unusual name…
The "Hot Lips” Morgan Dollar
The usual Morgan Dollar obverse was double struck in error, resulting in a doubling up of Lady Liberty’s lips, chin and nose, with the lips resembling Elvis Presley at his lip-quivering best, creating the name “Hot Lips”.
“Needle in a haystack”
It is one of the most famous coin errors in the world, but trying to find one is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Over 12 million Morgan Dollars were struck out of New Orleans in 1888, but “Hot Lips” examples are so rare because millions of Morgan Dollars were melted down.
So many, in fact, that less than 1 in 5 Morgan Dollars struck survive today.
